9 Things wedding couples wish they had done differently on their big day

Wedding Planning Advice

Your wedding day is one of the most important celebrations of your life—but even the most well-intentioned plans can come with unexpected regrets. From skipping a wedding planner to hiring vendors without proper research, small decisions can have a big impact on your experience. Over the years, I’ve heard countless couples share the things they wish they’d done differently, and their insights are worth considering as you plan your own special day. In this post, we’ll explore common wedding planning missteps—and how to avoid them—so you can focus on what truly matters: enjoying every beautiful, joy-filled moment.

Not hiring a wedding planner or wedding coordinator

A wedding coordinator plays a vital role in making sure that the wedding day runs smoothly and stays on schedule. They ensure that everything unfolds without any issues, allowing the couple to enjoy their special day without added stress. Additionally, the coordinator serves as a reliable point of contact for vendors, handling any inquiries that arise without needing to involve the couple in every decision.

However, it’s important to approach wedding value packages that include coordinator services with caution. It’s essential to thoroughly review all the details, as there have been numerous instances where couples found that their coordinators did not meet their expectations or deliver the services they believed they were receiving.

Hiring a photographer strictly  on a budget

When choosing a wedding photographer, it’s essential to consider the style that resonates with you. Think about whether you envision your photos as dark and moody, light and airy, vibrant with color, or perhaps expressed in classic black and white. You should also reflect on the type of photography that suits your preferences—do you lean towards a photojournalistic approach, where candid moments are captured seamlessly, or do you prefer a photographer who emphasizes more posed shots? Maybe you desire a blend of both styles to encapsulate the full spectrum of your day.

Additionally, establishing a strong connection with your photographer is crucial, as you will be working closely with them throughout much of the wedding day. This rapport will ensure that you feel comfortable and relaxed, allowing for authentic moments to be captured beautifully. Ultimately, your choice of photographer will play a significant role in preserving the memories of your special day, so take the time to find someone who truly aligns with your vision and style.

Take time with your partner

Wedding days are such beautiful celebrations, often lasting 10-12 hours or more, but they can zoom by in an instant! Carve out 10-20 minutes just for you and your partner to soak in the moment together. This little pause will keep you connected and help you fully embrace the joy of your special day! Enjoy every precious second!

Not hiring a videographer

Having great wedding photos is excellent, but a well-captured and edited video can bring you back to that special day in a way that photos just can’t. Having video and audio from your vows, speeches, dancing, and even interviews with close family members will mean so much as the year passes after your wedding.

Ensuring that you practice hair and makeup

Whether you have makeup and hair done by a professional or you are doing it yourself. Practicing ensures you are happy with that look and will not be stressed on your wedding day. You want to look your best, and feeling confident with your hair and makeup can make that much easier.

Not taking the time to eat

A wedding is a very long day; feeling hungry will not make your day enjoyable. Not to mention, there will most likely be alcohol consumed at several points during the day, and drinking on an empty or close to empty stomach is never a good idea. Finally, you probably spent time picking your food menu, so you should also get a chance to enjoy it.

Hiring a professional  DJ or MC and not giving them the freedom to do their job

It is excellent to guide them on the kinds of songs you want during your weddings, but do not give them a strict playlist that they must adhere to, like they can not change the order of songs or anything. Let them do their jobs and create a great afternoon and night for you.

Not working with their photographer before the day of the wedding

If possible, working with your photographer before your wedding is essential. Since it will allow you to become comfortable in front of the camera and posing style. You will work closely with them for the whole wedding day, so having a positive and trusting relationship is critical.

Have people that come to your wedding that you feel presured to have

This day is about celebrating and showing your love for each other. There must be a cut-off somewhere, whether who gets to bring plus ones or who gets an invite. Weddings are expletive; adding people you do not feel strongly should be at your wedding will only increase the price or the stress of the wedding day. You should get to pick who comes and is apart of one of the most important days of your life.
